Dyre Haugen Reflections

Use it or Loose it !

Yesterday I got a reminder from Mars! There is a ‘Starmus’ conference going on these days, in Trondheim, Norway. One astronaut told about returning to Earth after 43 days in Space - the message being that what you don’t use (in Space) you have lost when back (on Earth) - i.e. without gravity your sense of balance get lost - you have to retrain basic mobility capabilities upon return.

So also for elderly people - without exercising mind and body capabilities get lost. Thats why daily dogwalking keeps me (and the dogs) going.

Beware also the mental vulnurality. Who recalls phone numbers these days? Say your phone got missed and you need to ask someone else to make a call for you - would you be able to tell the number to dial?

The Times They Are A Changing

End of an era? Donald Trump has been on his first international trip as President of the U.S. European leaders for the first time in postwar history finds they can no longer trust the U.S. Government. Neither in defence (Nato), climate change (Paris Accord) or trade (TTIP). We are experiencing the slow collapse of the hegemonic US era. Gone are the days of the Washington Concensus and the Neoliberal economic doctrine. The EU establishment seems though to still cling to these - Merkel & Macron want to pick up the flag abandonned by the US and to take on a European leadership of prolonged globalisation. Alas, watershed periods starts with confusion and nostalgia. Forwards-looking policies are still waiting to emerge.

Local Development

After some trouble this seems to be partly working in local development mode. What is not working is to put the content of the generated _site into a a web server subdirectory. In _config.yml I have to put base.url: / If I try base.url: /some_sub_directory links will be incorrect and the theme decorations disappear. Any suggestions for how to fix this?

I had to do:

  • apt-get -y install linux-headers-uname -r
  • apt-get -y install make
  • apt-get -y install ruby-dev
  • apt-get -y install ruby-git
  • apt-get -y install zlib1g-dev

  • gem install bundler
  • cd xgit
  • bundle install
  • and include in _config.yml:
  • gems: [jekyll-paginate]

This recipe was not that simple!: ——————————– Local Development

Install Jekyll and plug-ins in one fell swoop: gem install github-pages

This mirrors the plug-ins used by GitHub Pages on your local machine including Jekyll, Sass, etc.

Clone down your fork: git clone https://github.com/yourusername/yourusername.github.io.git

Serve the site and watch for markup/sass changes: jekyll serve

View your website at http://127.0.0.1:4000/

Commit any changes and push everything to the master branch of your GitHub user repository. GitHub Pages will then rebuild and serve your website. —————————————————————————

Welcome to Dyrehaugen

I am testing github pages for blogging and found Bruce Eckel’s blog setup inspiring. Trying to use it as a template by forking it to Dyrehaugen and making changes as appropriate. We will see if this turns into something useable … Meanwhile just enjoy the beautiful theme picture
